FROM THE PASTOR: Rev. Larry Hoffmann

I think the spiritual discipline of Daily Prayer is a most difficult exercise to be consistent with. Yet daily prayer is an essential quality for the Christian life. The apostle Paul charged the early church to “pray without ceasing” (1Thessalonians 5:17).

In The Institutes of the Christian Religion, John Calvin wrote, “since our weakness is such that it has to be supported by many aids, and our sluggishness such that it needs to be goaded, it is fitting each one of us should set apart certain hours for this exercise.” Calvin designated “certain hours” as arising and retiring for the day, before and after eating, and before beginning our daily work. The rhythm of daily prayer reminds us that all our moments are lived in God’s presence. The patterns of daily prayer add focus, strength and hope, to any season of life we are experiencing.

Set apart at least one opportunity each day to pray. Be filled with the presence of God and discover God’s promises and call to you each day.

God’s peace be with you,

Larry
